"The question is not
'Can they reason?',
nor 'Can they talk?',
but rather, 'Can they suffer?'"

Residents of St. John's were horrified when the abuse story of this 12 week-old kitten from the Old Pennywell Road area broke on November 7, 2008. Little Charlie's eye had been either beaten out of his head on purpose, or he was somehow injured by an object forcefully thrust into his eye, and not treated. Either way, the abuse sickened us all.

The donations for Charlie's surgery and veterinarian care came pouring from all over the region, and we're happy to report that Charlie is recuperating from the removal of his eye and is now in a loving and safe adoptive home.

But Charlie is just the tip of the iceberg.

Heavenly Creatures deals with neglect and abuse all the time. In the days that Charlie grabbed our attention, we also took in a brain-damaged kitten dumped at the racetrack; little Frankie, suffering in a pound with a rampant, untreated infection, and who didn't make it after all due to a spinal cord condition; and we even heard of a litter of newborns that someone flushed down a toilet.

Donate whatever you can to help animals like Charlie, and ask your friends and family to do the same.
